FAC 61G5-32.001 explained: Florida’s cosmetology CE rule

Checked against the course text on 2026-09-22. Educational only; not legal advice.

Florida Administrative Code rule 61G5-32.001 is the Board of Cosmetology rule that sets the continuing education requirement for license renewal. It sits in chapter 61G5, the Board’s rule chapter, under the authority of Chapter 477, Florida Statutes — the Cosmetology Act.

Where it fits

Three legal documents govern a Florida cosmetology or specialty license:

  • Chapter 477, Florida Statutes — the law passed by the Legislature. It defines the license types and lists prohibited acts.
  • FAC chapter 61G5 — the Board of Cosmetology’s rules, including sanitation (61G5-20.002) and continuing education (61G5-32.001).
  • FAC chapter 61-6 — DBPR’s procedural rules.

What the rule requires

10 hours of Board-approved CE per two-year renewal cycle, allocated across eight subjects:

Subject Hours
HIV/AIDS 1.0
Sanitation and sterilization 3.0
OSHA 0.5
Workers’ compensation 0.5
State and federal laws 2.0
Chemical makeup 1.0
Environmental issues 1.0
Elective 1.0
Total 10.0

The same 10 hours apply to cosmetologists, nail specialists, and full specialists.

Who reports

The approved provider reports your completion. You do not self-report required Florida cosmetology CE.
